PLAY - MIDI File Player
Version 2.2
RECORD - MIDI File Recorder
Version 1.0
Copyright 1989, 1990, Kevin Weiner
Description
-----------
PLAY and RECORD are simple MIDI file utilities, mainly intended for
quick, command line use. PLAY can be thought of as analogous to the
TYPE command in DOS, except it plays a standard MIDI file. RECORD reads
incoming MIDI data and saves it to a MIDI format file. RECORD is useful
for saving quick sequences for playback with PLAY. It may also be used
to record MIDI System Exclusive dumps which PLAY can resend at a later
time. While PLAY has an interactive mode which allows a good bit of
playback control, neither program is intended to replace the functions
of a full sequencing program, just as the TYPE and COPY commands are not
replacements for a full text editor.
RECORD is new in with this release of PLAY, and should be considered
a test version. Also new is support for Microsoft-compatible mice.
If you experience any difficulties, please contact the author.
Installation
------------
These programs requires no special installation, except that the help
files, PLAY.HLP and RECORD.HLP, should reside either in the current
directory, or in a directory contained in the DOS path. To run, type
"PLAY" or "RECORD". See the "Command line usage" section of the help
files for further details and options.
PLAY version 1.5 is also included (PLAY15.EXE). It is identical in
function to PLAY version 2, but without the interactive display. It
requires less than half the memory of version 2, and will play MIDI
files up to the maximum memory size of the system. Version 2 is limited
to about 90K of MIDI data. Both versions have a single track limit of
64K bytes.
This version of RECORD is limited to a single track containing 64K bytes
of MIDI data.
Hardware
--------
PLAY: Requires from 76K (version 1.5) to 194K (version 2) of memory,
floppy or hard drive (if configurations are to be saved), and either an
IBM Music Feature card, or a Roland MPU-401 compatible MIDI interface.
RECORD: Requires 128K memory, floppy or hard disk, and MFC or
MPU-compatible MIDI interface.
